The evening ceremony on even-numbered dates begins with the Great Repentance before the Eighty-Eight Buddhas. It is stated in the sutras that if a person hears, praises, recites, and respects the Buddhas' names, they would not fall into the evil paths and will ultimately meet the Buddhas of the ten directions. Furthermore, if someone had committed the four sins (killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, and false speech) or the five grand offenses (killed one's father, mother, or an arhat, shed the blood of a Buddha, or destroyed the harmony of the Sangha), they should repent with a sincere resolve before the Buddhas. The number eighty-eight symbolically represents all the Buddhas of the past, present and future. While reciting the eighty-eight Buddhas' names, all past and present faults are sincerely repented and the resolve to follow the Buddha's path is strengthened.
