***UPDATED 10/7/11: This siren was recently knocked down in September during a wind storm, but the EMA has put it back in place!***

For you high-bandwidth people, this was shot in 1080p...adjust your settings!

Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T
Crosby Middle School
Louisville, KY
Siren #17
Test recorded on February 8, 2011
Distance from siren: 493 feet

First off, let me apologize for the shaky camera...I had class in Lexington till 10 : 30 and made it to this Thunderbolt in Louisville only seconds before it began sounding at noon. I had no time to set up the tripod.

You may also notice (look paaaast the shakiness) the much better recording quality compared to my last 2 recordings. I got a camcorder for Christmas, and after last months canceled test, I was so excited to get to record one with it. I shot it in HD, although I am sure Youtube downgraded it some, but still, it looks and sounds better than the recordings last time with my Droid. For those in the market for a new camera, I got the Cannon Vixia HFM31, and it is incredible.

This is a very clean, well-kept, and beautiful-sounding t-bolt, which is typical of Louisville, save for a few (think: J-town high school) that I know of. About 3 inches of snow fell last night, and you can see some remaining snow on one side of the horn as it rotates.

I do not have an ear for pitch quite yet, but I am guessing this is a Louisville-standard 5/6 port. I welcome all comments. Once again, I apologize for the shaky cam...it is one of my pet peeves too. Just couldn't pull it off today.

One last note, I WILL be here for next months testing too, and I have a really cool set-up in mind for recording, so stay tuned!

Tyler

  • These stared in day of the killier tornadies

  • @Thepinkfloydmaster Yup. They were installed just 2 years prior to that day if I recall!

  • these sirens scare the crap out of me

  • @jjesus2468 I bet you learn to love em!

  • Great recording! This siren can be heard at my uncle's house off Whips Mill Road, along with over 10 other sirens.

If I would have known you were off from school yesterday, I would have called you, and maybe we could have went over to JTown High School. The TBolt at Waggener High School is also interesting, because it has a C series blower.

  • @LouisvilleTorn8o Yeah, we will definitely have to catch that one then. Maybe march?

  • no i have senative hearing and i used to live on the airforce acedemy back in the the 90s and hear those sirens go off

  • @murrfarms Wow, I dont know! I will have to check! I didnt do anything to this one, obviously. I will have to dig around in the menu and see what I find. Thanks for the tip!

  • @murrfarms Haha nevermind I feel stupid, didn't read far enough down in the description. I think yours may be a notch higher on the scale than mine. Does yours have the on-screen adjustable microphone gain? That comes very much in handy for sirens, as you can dial it back to around -12dB on the camera for the recording, and when you run it through something like Audacity and re-amplify the sound to 0dB, it sounds absolutely amazing!

  • Hey Tyler, did you by chance get a Canon HF R10 camera? It looks to give the same quality as my R10, which looks REALLY great! Glad you were able to record for the test

  • Great Video
