Most dogs were bred for something. Hunting, guard dogs, royalty, etc.
There were a lot of dogs bred for doing work on the farm. I am not sure why domestic cats were originally bred, but I know that they were used to hunt mice and rats (and other pests) on the farm. Farmers used to stop feeding their cats so the cat's only option would be to hunt for mice and rats. It's okay to watch a cat do it's job.
