The UN secretary-general has urged world leaders gathering at a summit on food security to make the "hard decisions" necessary to bring down soaring global food prices.

The price of an average food basket is spiraling across the world.

Al Jazeera has been to meet familes around the world struggling to meet the costs of everyday living.

  • Food prices on the rise. Mercury found in high fructose corn syrup. Melamine found in baby formula. Aspertame an addmitted neurotoxin.  Sodium fluoride, a banned pesticide, in our toothepaste. GM crops comprising 90%+ of our corn and soybeans. And home gardens being banned.

    Oh yes... thank GOD we live in these modern times. Thank GOD for all the progress.
