Heston Blumenthal was hired to bring gastronomic respectability to the Popham motorway stop on the A303, operated by one of Britain's most dismal caterers. A TV series told the tale of his uphill struggle. The result? No snail porridge, just good honest bistro cooking, at least for a part of the menu.

Will it last? Will it spread? Two more reconstructed branches have opened up and the Popham original is in the Good Food Guide!
