I was viewing a Woody clip on here and someone left a comment lamenting that there was no Gregory Herbert clips.. well here you go. Just a dynamite player, taken from us way to early. Also has some stout lead trumpet by Dave Stahl.

  • Greg Herbert--my personal favorite. Can only imagine what he would have done had he lived--especially looking at Lovano's career. Herbert's backing of Chet Baker "Once upon a Summertime" is I think the last jazz record he cut prior to the BS&T debacle. Man is he missed; but catch Herbert's solo on "The Song is You" on the Baker album. Obviously, the Live at Montreaux album is a must have for sax players. He was so technically gifted at ballads--that is a muscular sound.

  • Wow, I just read David Clayton Thomas' autobiography, there's a chapter dealing with the death of Greg Herbert while he was playing with BS and T.

Wow, Greg is using a Yamaha YTS61 in this clip, sounds great.

  • Brilliant. I believe Gregory was originally an alto player, and maintained that lightness of feel through his tenor work with Woody and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Well worth checking out is the "Mel Lewis and Friends" LP, where he makes a worthy foil for Michael Brecker. Any more video posts would be appreciated! Good to know that he is still remembered and appreciated.

  • Woody was in his blacksploitation mode. Move over Shaft!!!! YEAH

  • Thanks for posting this of Gregory Herbert. Woody Herman visited my high school in 1975 or 1976, and Greg Herbert was my first sax hero. I remember lamenting his death from my dorm room in Bruce Hall at what was then North Texas State University back in 1977-78.

  • The same song that woody redid is off from heavy exposure and live at montreux as well! still have both albums.

  • That's my dad on lead!

  • Woody to Frank Tiberi "I got da fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell".

  • Bill Byrne on trumpet at far right, and Jim Pugh center trombone, I believe.

  • Thanks. the other tenor saxophonists are Gary Anderson and Frank Tiberi.
