Taking the first few shots with the Steyr HS-50 rifle on the first day of the new year. We're shooting surplus .50 BMG that's been pulled and reloaded with surplus 647 FMJ Ball projectiles. It shot pretty well, producing a clover at 100 yards, and probably busting clays at 300 yards. I say probably because all that's left where the clay was is a garbage can sized crater, and shards of clay pigeon scattered around the area.

The Steyr has a very efficient muzzle brake, recoil is significantly reduced, and everyone but the shooter is hit with a very hard, but quick, blast of air, which really isn't such a bad thing when it's in the single digits outside.

Good times were had.

(This is most definitely not a Barret, though I'd like to get one someday, as I'm very enthused by Ronnie Barret's letter to L.A. after the .50 caliber ban)

  • Who needs a blow dryer, when you"ve got a .50 cal....SWEET!

  • Thanks. I might get a video shooting it again before I cut my hair, just for the laughs.

  • This Rifle looks really small/lightweight for a .50 cal. So it must have a lot of recoil im guessing.

  • It's about 30 pounds, but it has a very good muzzle brake on it. It kicks about as much as my M1A, but with less muzzle rise.

  • Sweet!

  • Whoops. At least you're not saying something that bad, though. But if you're playing CS, I think all the Steyrs in there are made of plastic, so you're safe. Especially the Steyr TMP, which the bolt is metal, but rides in a plastic receiver.

  • This one's mostly metal. Only plastic parts are a cover over the forend, AR-15 pistol grip, and the cheekpiece. Rest is steel and aluminum. Some of my other rifles do have plastic stocks, though, but most of 'em have an aluminum bedding block in the stock. I certainly wouldn't mind getting a Steyr, though, but I'd rather have an SSG, preferably the 69 PIV, that'd be fun even without a suppressor.

  • Oops, my mistake, there's a 6.5-25 is on my Remington 700, but it's a Konus. Kinda wanted to give them a try.

    The Steyr sports an 8.5-25.
