I have updated this video to remove the backtrack music. Click on the link on the video or go to: www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2mmoU37SDo

There are problems associated with connecting a XLR (balanced) to a 1/4" (unbalanced) connection. This video shows you how to wire an XLR directly to a 1/4" (not recommended) and also shows you a basic direct box schematic and two types of "direct boxes". Using a line transformer is the PREFERRED method to match the impedance mismatch and provide cleaner and louder sound. This also shows you what a ground lift switch is.

  • annoying background sounds!!!

  • @rchlwoof YES! I agree! I will never do that again! =) It was an idea that didn't go very well. KCObsession also brought it to my attention. Hey, I like your video of "Drift Away". Very nice.

  • Good info. But why not demonstrate with actual audio (hum in the unbalanced line, clean in the balanced line or with the transformer?

  • @KN4AQ Great idea. I'll set up a demo and get it posted. I'll send you a note when it posts.

  • @KN4AQ As I promised you, I posted a video of the actual audio difference between a balanced and unbalanced line. See my video: "Balanced vs Unbalanced Cables: more types of equipment hum" Thanks again for the suggestion.

  • Nice video bit distracting with the music.

  • @KCObsession Thank you for the positive and useful feedback. I can adjust the next video accordingly knowing what you like.
