At the mouth of Petaluma Creek in the northern reaches of the San Francisco Bay estuary, this project is progressing nicely through the multiple stages of restoration. Before plants can colonize the wetland, enough sediment must be deposited to bring the bottom elevation up to a suitable level. Sediment arrives suspended in the water column on the incoming tide, and falls to the bottom in the protected confines of the restorations site. Even before extensive plant colonization, the mudflats provide essential foraging habitat for shorebirds.
