Hi. I'm Delegate Kirill Reznik. Welcome back to my weekly video blog for the week of March 29th updating you on what is happening here, in Annapolis, during the 2010 General Assembly Session. Sorry we couldn't get the video out on Friday, as usual. We were working late into the afternoon on the budget.
Speaking of the budget, Friday we passed the Houses version. The governor introduced his version at the start of session and the Senate made their proposed cuts and revisions. Last week, we in the House had our turn. We have cut an additional 500 million dollars from what the Governor originally proposed in order to balance the budget while taking into account the realities of the current fiscal environment. While many important programs lost funding in this process, I know we will do what we can to restore these worthy services when the economy improves. I am proud to say that the House preserved our commitment to having the best public school system in the country along. We also worked to maintain our AAA bond rating. In tough economic times, we need to be fiscally prudent and this budget achieves that while still maintaining funding for several of the states most important priorities.
Also this week, we worked on gang legislation that will give prosecutors more weapons to target gang leaders and their associates by increasing the penalties for criminal activities committed by a gang. Though I support the overall goals of the bill, there are a number of concerns about some of the details of the legislation, which I share. I am hopefully that through the legislative process we can work out the issues and get gangs out of our communities by going after their leaders.
Thats it for this weeks update. Please feel free to contact my office if you have questions or concerns dealing with these issues or any other issues before the General Assembly.
Thank you for tuning in and I look forward to briefing you again next week.
