They also help him prevent unintended feedback between the guitar and amp. That allows him to let the amp run cleaner and louder than he could without them.

@Xen8 They are clearsonic baffles. Basically they stop a beam of sound hitting the audience, particularly the front row. Look up Joe bonamassa- clearsonic baffle. He can explain better than I can.
