  • With luck I will be receiving a similar procedure soon. As a child I was administered HGH and the surgeon said that this might cause a misshapen femual head...wish me luck

  • @BritainNelms You will be able to play all kinds of sports including contact sports again (4 to 6 months after the surgery) , as far as the limping you need to have an x-ray taken to determine if your pelvis is tilted if so the surgery will correct most of it but not all, the rest will come if you work hard with a good physical therapist and on your own as well. As for the surgery you will need to contact a surgeon that has done in excess of 200 such surgeries don't settle for less. Good luck

  • Allright so I Have AVN in BOTH femoral heads the only trouble I have is in my right hip I haven't been able to touch my foot or bend over and stretch in about four years so naturally I've just been walking with the pain I'm 19 so this sux I can play some sports but if it includes bending my right leg more than 90 degrees forget it, would I still walk with a limp after a resurfacing and could I play sports with contact and run?!!!

  • Steroidalanti-inflammatory hip injections lead to softening of the bone. Temporary fix at best, and not recommended for repeated use.

  • MsMocassins - the procedure takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. I just underwent the surgery 9 days ago. I went off all painkillers 3 days after the operation. I'm already up crutching around and doing rehab exercises. If you've got a bad hip, get it done. The only pain I have - already - is muscle stiffness in the morning from my rehab exercises. I was crutching a bit the afternoon of the surgery. Choose a surgeon who's done over 350. Dr. Colin Poole in Boise, ID did mine. Awesome doc & hospital.

  • Actually, this is a procedure that has been in use only about 10 years max. Hip resurfacing has only been FDA-approved in the U.S. for about 2-3 years. So It definitely bears no relationship to a "model from 1930-1940". Only total hip replacements were in use prior to hip resurfacing. In a "total hip," the femur (including the ball and neck) is cut off, then an L-shaped piece, which includes a chrome steel ball, neck and long pierced section, are pounded into the femoral shaft.

  • I went down to theatre at around four and was back on the ward at about six having spent 40 mins or so in recovery. I was 54 when I had mine done and I now have no pain or discomfort in that hip. By the way, I have not exaggerated my recovery and I was back to normal, driving and walking without a stick in comfort within six weeks.

  • how long did the proceedure take? I am thinking about doing it this year. I am 42 years old.

  • I think they only use cemented procedure for older patient. It's hard to do revision with that

  • I thought this design isn't used anymore. If I'm not mistaken this design is similar to a model from 1930-1940. It didn't do too well due to stress shielding -- bone resorption.
