The Australian elections are coming up on 21 Aug 2010 and under a Green/Labour govt. our fishing could be under threat.
Fishing is part of our unique Australian life-style...
But BEWARE! If the Greens get their way, we could be banned from fishing in many public waters and restricted in this healthy family activity. If YOU and your kids enjoy this simple outdoor pleasure, DON'T risk voting for the Greens or their Labour Mates!

  • Thanks for all the great comments everyone.

I and most other rec fishers are conservationists and the last thing I want to see is fish stocks get to a stage where they are not sustainable. However, I believe good fisheries management rather than locking people out is the way to go.

These "no take zones" don't necessarily mean good fisheries management.

  • We and hundreds of other people have tried to contact Peter Garret and Labour for the last 8 Months (Jan 2010) to find out their official zoning policies and received no information.

Having seen some of these statements ie "90% of fish gone", As someone who spends a lot of time on the water, I find this very hard to believe and question where they get this information from.

  • "These "no take zones" don't necessarily mean good fisheries management."

Neither does the answer submitted by the opposition. We would hate for our stocks to plumet and end up with nothing, like in the UK and Europe. Good fisheries management needs to be pushed upon all political parties instead of taking sides and just greenie / labor bashing. The other team are climate change skeptics - you have got to be kidding, they don't know how to spell science!

  • Well what can you say who is screwing who at the end of the day we are the ones bending over thanks

  • pollies..haha..theyre all bought and paid for anyway. As for CONSULTATION..apparently Garrett spoke to a bloke in the Northern Territory.. Your shit out of credibility Garrett.

  • they cant restrict fishing! not happy at all!

  • It is a fact that recreational fisherman are in general conservationists at heart, targeting species and selecting their catch with minimal waste. We have a deep desire for a healthy and diverse marine environment. We have long supported sustainable fishing practises. There is absolutely no rational or scientific basis for locking us out of 30% of the marine environment. Remember that this 30% actually is effectively locking us out of 99% of our fish catching areas.

  • @skimfisher

Maybe not ban it COMPLETELY, but are you up to date with the green party and what they are currently doing to Australian recreational fishing? The Moreton Island green zones? The Coombabah Creek green zones? The attempted ban of mako sharks? Open your eyes mate.

  • If the Greens get their way we'll all be riding electric scooters to work lol.

  • do people actually believe this shit? With fishing being a multi billion dollar industry (recreational and commercial), no government can afford to ban it completely. Some people are so friggin gullible....

  • most of us take what we need and let the rest go! i dont belive in freezing fish unless its a big fish like tuna, gummy, why dont they build more fake reefs and have them as no fishing zones then in 5 years swap back to other ones, this will completly f*#k victorian rec fishing and towns,

  • The "90% fish gone" statement came from a flawed report that dates back to a 2003 Myers and Worm report that was discredited and exposed as not credible by six subsequent studies. It is still conveniently used by anti-fishing people like Greens leader Bob Brown but leading scientists such as Professor Ray Hilborn from University of Washington have put the record straight - never was there 90% gone anywhere in the world and definitely not in Australia. It was just spin not science.
