Arthritis can be characterised as the inflammation of joints often resulting in pain, stiffness, disability and deformity. The main kinds of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2004-05). It can also be said that the prevalence of arthritis greatly increases with age and as our population ages. (March & Bagga, 2004). A critical finding by Farr et al. (2008) was that a high percentage of older adults do not achieve an optimal amount of physical activity for enhancing their health (i.e. 30 minutes a day). The primary goals of managing osteoarthritis reduce pain and improve functional ability and quality of life. Patient education and exercise are recommended as two mainstays of treatment. (Farr, Going, Lohman, Rankin, Kasle, Cornett & Cussler, 2008, p. 1229). The Australian Sports Commission in their ageing active populations document state Weight-bearing activity involving repeated loading on the body of two or more times body weight is beneficial for bone health.
