The trial of a New Brunswick police officer charged with assault began in a Fredericton courtroom on Monday.
Fredericton police Const. Stephen Stafford is accused of using excessive force during the arrest of an off-duty soldier outside Sweetwaters nightclub in July 2009.
Luc Begin, a soldier from Valcartier, Que., who was teaching at the infantry school at CFB Gagetown at the time, accused the Fredericton police of beating him during the arrest.
The incident was captured on video by a local blogger, Charles LeBlanc, and later posted on YouTube.
In the courtroom on Monday, Stafford's lawyer, T.J. Burke, attempted to suggest LeBlanc had altered or edited the video.
Burke introduced into evidence photographs from LeBlanc's website that he says indicate LeBlanc is not a fan of the RCMP or the Saint John Police Force.
Burke suggested LeBlanc's negative views towards police led him to alter the video.
In response, LeBlanc told the court, "I may be many things but I speak the truth, and what you see is what you get."
The trial is expected to continue on Tuesday. (less info)
