This is a very jazzy version of the classic song "Whispering", best known in the interpretation by "whispering" Jack Smith ( a record I am fortunate to have in my collection)... It was also a favourite of many big bands including Paul Whiteman who already recorded it in 1920 (See YouTube).... The song has endured. It was recently covered (in a very good way) by French chanteuse / actress Arielle Dombasle on her cd "Amor Amor".

Gus Deloof was a famed trumpeter, composer and bandleader. He played in the Fud Candrix orchestra and composed the "Harlem Swing", covered by many big bands. He recorded in the early 1930s as "Gus Deloof and his Racketeers", during the war with his swing orchestra and after the war he played at the Victory Club in Brussels ("Liberation Blues"). He then recorded for the Belgian Victory record label. One of the featured vocalists was Dorothy Carless - a popular singer best known for having sung in the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

This version of "Whispering" was recorded in Brussels in 1940.

  • Thanks for the video response!

Sounds like the tenor man took heavy heed of Coleman Hawkins while he was across the pond from 1934-1939.

Definitely reet for heat feet. ;) Thanks again!

  • Incroyable de penser que ce disque a été enregistré en 1940. Tellement de joie, alors que 1940 est une année si terrible. Merci!

  • And how they swing this old tune - GREAT !!!

  • Gus Deloof hat diese Klassiker wunderbar "verjazzt". Seine Interpretation von "Crazy Rhythm" ist die heißeste die ich kenne, und auch diese Aufnahme von "Whispering" ist großartig.

    Vielen Dank, Erwin!!
