But others who work on the show have claimed otherwise.
She's even called "Derpy" by the staff during episode planning.
-
The writer in charge of THAT EPISODE has clarified that Derpy is Ditzy Doo's nickname.

@kassarc16 Don't get me wrong, I am a Brony, but I prefer the fanon and canon to stay separate as much as possible.
-
@kassarc16 The fact that "Brony" influenced materially has blatantly ended up in the show means it's on a slow and painful slide from where it used to be.

@mannystella Why should I care about that video? It is an insult, just like stupid is. However, yes, there are occasions when it is used in jest. It boils down to the point that "Derpy Hooves" is bad because of this: it's a terrible name (nowhere near other established conventions) only liked by those with fan blinders on, mistakenly voiced as a male thus being a terrible voice for a female character, and her entire character was overdone to the point of being horrible.

Why does it seem that when anything awesome happens (Derpy becoming official) some prick has to come along and bitch and ruin everyone's fun?
@mtalsonic3000 Wake me up when Kyrospawn's channel gets taken down.

Really, the only people I've heard complaining about Derpy are diehard fans of the name Ditzy Doo and Hasbro themselves. Derpy may be a strange name, and indeed a strange pony at first glance, but she is definitely not mentally challenged, just clumsy and walleyed. Anyone who thinks otherwise is most likely basing their assumptions on stereotypes, and that's bad.
