The english lyrics are a lot softer than the original version.
Not quiet as meaningful as Brel.
I know: it has to rime. It's probably really hard to translate such genius.

it´s from the gregorian requiem chant "Dies irae, dies illa"

This version is performed by SCOTT WALKER. It is Bowie's version which is similar to that one, not the other way round. Bowie is a great fan of Walker, he even produced a documentary about him. This version here is older than the one made by DB.

right - on this theme i prefere the anglo-versions, too

I have just heard the other day a piece by Franz Liszt, that I am almost convinced strongly inspired Brel. Does anyone know?...

Brel's original verision is very different. The version here is similar to David Bowie's cover. I must admit that of all those three versions Brel's original is the weakest.

The intro is from Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique, right?

You can find La Mort on the Phillips LP Jacques Brel 3 which turns up on Ebay or on collections of early Phillips songs on CD. Also the Oeuvre Integrale.
