Like it is with FF6, FF7, FF12, and FFT, I thought level would max out at 99 in FF8. Upon seeing that spells and items were limited to 100, I thought level might be. I saw a weakness in the game's design that allowed me to reach level 99 (or 100) pretty much first thing in the story so I did just that and this video is of the final stretch of this. I had some evidence of this when Ifrit reached level 100 (who was leveling twice as fast as the other GF). I soon confirmed it with Squall first then later Quistis who was more than 6 levels behind. I even take on 2 dinos, a weak one that gets a lucky critical and a strong one where its critical could one-hit my characters.
Disgaea 1 has about 1270 hours of play and Disgaea 2 has 950 (1150 if quitting and reloading for perfecting items is included). That's basically 2400 hours on 2 Disgaea games in still less than 24 months. In Disgaea 2, I literally hold the world record for the most damage on a single target at once - 11 1/2 billion and there's no damage popup for it. I very regularly get 9-figure damage. My power primarily comes from perfecting items, of which I wrote a detailed guide for.

@ulillillia
How much time have you clocked on Disgaea 2? I've probably got around 350 or so hours, but the item worlding ended up getting way to repetitive for me. I imagine you've put a lot of time in if you're dealing that much damage. Specialist stacking?

why not keep squall low on heath and make sure you can get your rensokuken in and kill almost every thing on turn?

Unlike popular belief, level does not play as big a difference in difficulty as one would think. All level does is determine drawable magic and drops, and to a lesser extent attacks. The biggest difference maker is junctions. With good junctions the game is easy, with little to no or weak junctions the game is difficult. It all depends on how you like to play.

Well consider this the T rexes when NOT fighting inside the training center like the one shown on this video practically have a 1% chance of actually showing up.
But at the same time its the monster worth the highest exp before you you enter the Fire Cavern.

It's a PS2 and PS3 game (the original is the best to get started on). Unlike FF8, which is a pure RPG, Disgaea is an SRPG, like FF Tactics. I have videos showing it. Instead of level 99 being the cap, it's 9999. Equipment has a far greater effect than level in Disgaea though, but early on, level has quite a decent effect. Once you gain access to the item world, you'll really be in for extreme power. 1 3/4 years ago, I was just like you are today with Disgaea....

If big damage on your allies makes you sad, you'll definitely want to stay away from Disgaea. In Disgaea 2, I have a wizard that always deals 8-figure damage, 9-figure damage on a fire-weak enemy and has done 1.8 billion damage in a single hit. I've had my own allies take even 140,000 damage due to destroyed geo symbols and enemies have done damage into the 800K area as well (crank up the DEF stat enough and you'll become invincible to that kind of damage, like my main wizard is).
