Nah, I believe it's because in this game there isn't many dark pokemon and, since your rival uses a sneasel (idk how to spell it XD) and I THINK that Lance has a Tyranitar, she ended with just 3 darks. So, she got "dark/night-themed" pokemon to use. Also, using vileplume as a defence against fighter types is kinda tricky XD

Basically yes, I think Karen should have waited until R/S/E was made lolz. Karen should have at least had two of the same pokemons like Phoebe in Hoenn. She had like 2 Banettes.
