I think these may have been similar to the Hollywood Indians of the 1950s. Remember "Running Bear loved little White Dove"? And "him dead, Kemosabe."
-
@ferociousgumby - The book was written in 1903, and takes place in England. Their view of Native Americans was very different then. The Neverland is in the minds of the children. This is how Michael & John would have viewed the Indians.

I was just a little kid when I saw the first live broadcast of Peter Pan starring Mary Martin and I have to confess that my jaw dropped when I saw Sondra Lee as Tiger Lily!
She literally sent shivers of pre-sexual delight right through me even at my tender age, and my mother couldn't help but notice how besotted I was.
Was it her energetic dancing/gymnastics, her pouty expression, or the blonde bangs that got to me? All of the above!
Anyway, I've loved bangs on women ever since!

Do they still have these "Indians" in recent productions? I mean, really, ugga wugga meatball. Why not black kids with overalls and watermelons?

I remember watching this as a small child....it's so absurd that I didn't even associate it with native americans at the time haha

Ilove frogs dancing
As a native american, I found this enormously entertaining.
I wish we actually did this dance. :D It's brilliant.

I can't believe some of you are looking for reality in this production! Peter Pan is played by a woman, the kids are taken care of by a dog, they fly to a far away land of dancing animals. Then they meet Captain Hook, who makes Elton John look downright conservative. He is chased by an alligator with a clock in his stomach. And you are confused about a blonde Indian in all this? Besides, Sonya Lee--who played Tiger Lily --was a dynamite dancer and really cute. Color videotape from 1960!
