Civil Unions provide all the legal benefits to other loving family formations. Equally. Marriage is something specific. Take away the 1 man/father-1 woman/mother-sex-child aspect and it no longer serves any societal purpose. Anything goes & could be considered discriminating to any number of "love" relationships. SSM will lead to the de-institution of marriage, the only societal institution that values a child's connection to their own genetic mother, father, siblings and extended family.

I agree with Maggie Gallagher. I believe that the core purpose of maintaining the 1 man, 1 woman definition of marriage is to provide a societal norm and value - upheld by definition (legalities aside) - as a societal institution the connects CHILDREN to their genetic fathers and mothers. Not all marriages result in children & not all marriages last, but that isn't reason enough to change it's definition or purpose as any loving relationship of any number of people who "love" each other.
