A bluegrass song that I happened to stumble upon one day while surfing youtube. The pictures included do not belong to me, and neither does the idea. XD I actually borrowed the concept by another user on youtube, who posted similar pictures from the Great Depression on their video with the very same song. I felt that the pictures really suited the song.

  • Does anybody know if this is the original?

Greg Graffin did this one too, I'm just not sure wich one is the original (I like Graffin's version better)

  • By the way, I hope you mean the version of the song and not the actual song. XD This is just an amateur home-made recording..

  • I object to your use of the word "just." While there are some excellent musical renditions about I regard them as JUST "dolling up" the song. I love your raw vocal plea, ie. the fact that you sing it unaccompanied and straight from the heart. I think you caught the mood of the lyric wonderfully. By the definition of the 1954 International Folk Music Council there cannot be an original version as all performances are original to the performer and/or their community.

  • Hm.. I never really thought about it like that before. :) Thanks for sharing!

  • This is an old old old gospel song....

Greg Graffin is the f-ing man, so that's why anything he does is awesome..BUT

This lady has a really Beautiful voice!...Imagine her singing it to G.G.'s version...Perfect.

  • Wow, thanks! :D

  • Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

  • I first heard this on the Skaggs & Rice album. A great version, but the simplicity of this version is lovely too.

  • @Slorginvader It is an old traditional song. not either ones own song

  • The 1954 IFMC defintion is this:

Folk music is the product of a musical tradition that has been evolved through the process of oral transmission. The factors that shape the tradition are:

i/ continuity which links the present with the past

ii/ variation which springs from the individual or the group

iii/ selection by the community, which determines the form or forms in which the music survives.

  • Doc Watson did a version of this, but I can't be sure when. His was the first I had heard and is my favorite. Doc did it Acapella and it still chills me (and I'm a jew)
