Got my mom to take me to Owensboro KY today to record one of the many Whelen Vortex's that the county has. This siren is an older Whelen Vortex R4 located at 1316 Scherm Rd, Owensboro KY. It sounds a one minute wail cycle and continues for a few rounds of rotating after the siren stops sounding. The siren is sounding for the weekly test conducted every Friday at noon

My best friend Brooke was also there with me as I was recording.

  • Whats that thing on the back of the siren?

  • @CorvetteLoverZR1 It's a fin to help with the rotation of the siren. See the comment I replied to Tabby266's comment for more info.

  • gotta love that sound very errie!

  • @Tabby266 I am not 100% sure why it's shaking It was a little windy but I have a theory that the sound waves from the siren had something to do with it.

The fin was put on older, belt driven Vortex's so that if the belt broke the siren could still have some way of rotating. It was also used to help rotate with the belt. They stopped using the fin when they switched to gear driven rotators on the Vortex's.
