Thank you 3 Doors Down for allowing me to use your song in my video!! :D

Two weeks before I shot this, I came home to find a Mourning Dove persistently standing or pacing around my front garden. Later that day, the neighbor saw me photographing her and came out to explain the tree trimmers the day before had felled the limb where the dove had built a nest. The only fledgling had fallen towards my garden, but they couldn't find it. When I looked more closely into the bushes, I saw a large, black water snake with a bulge about a quarter of the way down its frame. The snake appeared to have eaten the fledgling.

The next day, I came home and saw both the parent doves perched on a broken tree branch on the ground. They were staring at the garden area where the fledgling had fallen, where we had found the snake.

For the next three days, one of them, I presume the mother remained perched either on my roof top or in the neighbors trimmed tree where the nest had once been. Often, we could hear her cooing her mournful call.

I've heard this coo many times, but this time, it revealed the true meaning to their name: Mourning Dove. Now, she sang a sad song of wanting, a mother wanting her lost baby.

I took this video two weeks later of the couple walking along my back fence, in the area where I see them most now.

This is for them and for all fledglings lost in the Spring.

  • Thank you, Tara. Actually, I saw the couple in one of my trees, where I've put a new bowl of seeds, and they had two fledglings with them. yay! The mother seems to remember the attention I paid her, and she lingers closely and watches when I say hello. She gives me joy she can never know.
