It's so interesting to hear his voice. We used to have the old wax cylinders with his bird calls on them. Glad to know about his trip in the 1920s.

I never met him. He was gone by the time I was born....But there are a lot of stories about him in the family. We used to have the old wax cylinders of his bird imitations and of course bird imitations were considered fine entertainment in the late Victorian period. He'd travel a great deal, (and always brought back things for his sisters). The family story is he could lure any bird up onto the front porch in Thompsonville Connecticut.

Thank you for sharing this. Avis specialized in American bird calls (featured on Thornton Burgess's Radio Nature League) but took a trip to England in the 1920s specifically to learn these songs.
His real name was Martin Sullivan. He was my (great uncle.)
