A Knife I Made For Jess

This is a knife i created out of an old rusty bit of metal I found in the yard. I made it for my nephew Jess due to the fact he needed a skinning knife this year. I pounded the shape out and cut away as I went along. It was a long process but hearing the anvil ring was almost music. I forgot what a joy and what a workout forging is. I got the shape I desired and then with the help of a hand grinder and a few files I refined the shape. Cutting grooves on the top of the blade for a better grip and also adding a hole in the blade itself for an optional grip point. After all the work I put into the knife I then again heated it up and then gave it a dip into cold oil to temper the blade. The polishing process I think was the hardest part and also took the most time. The end result though is one I am proud of and am glad to hand over knowing it will be used and respected by the man who will soon be its owner!

@Boneyman Thank you for the compliment! When this film was shot I had not yet put the patina on the knife using vinegar. Every once in a while the knife needs an oiling. Especially if it is being put up for some time.

so did you just dip it in used motor oil

@GarrettJDB I did dip it in Motor Oil 30 SAE, but it was new oil which had never been used. A good heating and a dip in oil made it tough. Careful though...cold oil hot metal makes fire!
