canadian indie band final fantasy (aka owen pallett) performs at schuba's in chicago 10.12.07

owen is a brilliant, classically trained violinist whose music is simply magical (in fact, his last album "he poos clouds" was intended to "illustrate" the 8 schools of magic from "dungeons and dragons"); this video is a good demonstration of owen's on stage "looping" process

  • He's brilliant, but why the hell call himself 'Final Fantasy' when that name is already associated so heavily with a massive video-game franchise, known for it's music much more than Mr Pallett?

He should stick to his real name, or make up an original stage name

  • i'm not going to argue with you, especially since googling this guy is a bitch . . . but it's hard for me to complain about someone who makes such pretty

  • this song is genius, and so is owen. do you by any chance have the mp3 of this song from the 7" it was released on? I can't find it or "Hey Dad" anywhere. and thanks so much for posting this video!

  • i don't have the 7" tracks, but thetorturegarden posted this one (you can search for it on hype machine), and you can stream "hey, dad!" at stereogum

    both are stunning

  • the 8 schools of magic are Dungeons & Dragons, nothing to do with the Final Fantasy videogames.

  • you're right . . . my geek lore is a bit lame . . . thanks for the correction (hope you enjoyed the tune anyway)

  • @tommyk77 yeah on his new album hes just owen pallett

  • @ler0y182 What an annoying homage to make. Besides, I've read he isn't going by the pseudonym now. So glad

  • @tommyk77 he names himself after the game

  • It's not true that it has no relevance; regardless of how unhelpful it was to have had that as his name (he now identifies himself as Owen Pallett), the name specifically was a dedication to the series 'Final Fantasy', and more generally to video games as well, which he obviously played a lot of.

  • bingo

  • Final Fantasy as a video-game franchise began in 1987. Owen Pallett was born in 1979. Did he create Final Fantasy when he was 8?

Besides, it makes no sense. His stage name has no relevance.

  • Final Fantasy is a project about video games.

Owen Pallet is the one who created the project.

  • Yeah tell me about it. I'm only ever after one or the other and they are both very different
