This is the launch of the Aquarius/SAC-D satellite, aboard a Delta II rocket at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, on June 10, 2011. We are 1.5 - 2 miles away from Space Launch Complex 2.

When the countdown reaches zero (at around 0:10), watch the center fencepost. None of us knew exactly where the launch complex was on the horizon, so of course I positioned myself with a fencepost between me and the launch. The plume was visible for a moment and then disappeared into the clouds. Still, the sound was awesome.

The rumble starts at about 0:40 and lasts till the end.

Less-personal, but much better videos are available here: http://aquarius.nasa.gov/

  • Wow! Where were you at? I was up on the NE side of VAFB socked in thick fog, looks like you got the best spot in the house to see it from.

  • Sorry man, I had to give this video a thumbs down... I'm sure you understand!
