The Choir of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh, under the direction of Duncan Ferguson, perform Anton Bruckner's sacred motet 'Virga Jesse'. The motet, like several other works ('Est ist Ein Ros Entsprungen/ Lo, How a Rose 'ere Blooming', 'A Spotless Rose') commonly performed during the Advent and Christmas seasons, draws from Isaiah:11 and addresses the genealogy of Jesus— namely that He is descended from King David and David's father, Jesse.
[ Text: ]
Virga Jesse floruit:
Virgo Deum et hominem genuit:
pacem Deus reddidit,
in se reconcilians ima summis.
Alleluja.
[ English Translation: ]
The rod of Jesse hath blossomed:
a Virgin hath brought forth God and man:
God hath restored peace,
reconciling in Himself the lowest with the highest.
Alleluia.
[ Recording available on 'Bruckner Motets' (Delphian, 2011). ]
@ChrissysVideokids Thanks kindly. It's quite a piece and quite a sound from the choir. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
