DJ Boy is a so-so, controversial beat-em-up game developed back in the late 80s / early 90s by Kaneko, and featured a variety of stereotypes, racial overtones, and interesting pop culture. It also featured two disk jockeys, "Demon Kogure" in Japan and "Wolfman Jack" in the U.S. (though the U.S. game still uses Demon Kogure's sprite in the short intro). A fair (and much easier) conversion was made for the Sega Genesis / MD which lacked a two player mode and changed several of the game's references and was less "hip", but had better play control, you could gain money, and it featured a shop after levels which could increase your abilities. A (better) sequel named "B. Rap Boys" was made for the Arcades in 1992. This was one of the early games from my childhood that I first played on the Sega Genesis (and added to my collection not so long ago).

While the Gen/MD game had a plot of some kind (in its manual primarily), the Arcade game doesn't really have much of one. Playing as the titular "DJ Boy" (named Donald J. Boy in the Gen/MD game), you're out to stop some lame "Roller Fighters" who crashed your groove session and took your beatbox, and the game continues from there as things get bizarre. Dubbed a fight-race, you fight people on rollerskates at high speeds and ocassionally slow down to take care of any lingering thugs and boss enemies.

You have a limited assortment of punches and kicks to use and enemies have A LOT of vitality. You get bonus points by sucessfully landing tricky jump attacks, can attack people with back attacks during chase sessions, and can gain extra lives by meeting special stage requirements, beating up thugs, and collecting music notes. The game is harder than the Genesis game due to the difficulty of moving during chase sessions (which wasn't apparent in the Gen/MD game) which was designed to seem a little more realistic. However, the enemies have no problem zipping out of harm's way or manuevering themselves inside you for cheap hits. It's also easier to die, and this game will eat a lot of quarters without a friend to aid you.

This is a video of the first level. Additionally, here's the overview of the Genesis game (taken from the U.S. manual, typos and all) so you can understand a little more what this game is about, though it's important to note that they don't share the same exact plot. Enjoy:

Cigaretch City is a lively town on the outskirts of New York. A new sport has become popular amongst the children in Cigaretch City. The sport is Rollergame! Rollergame is an exciting battle of technique and speed. It is a thrilling game of out-running and being outrun. Rollergame is somewhat like the ultimate fight-race. A rollergame competition is coming up soon and the children in town are excited.

Just before the competition, a young man turns up in town. His name is Donald J. Boy, and he's nicknamed D.J. Boy. D.J. Boy has actually toured the world as a roller fighter, and he just happens to drop into Cigaretch City with his girlfriend, Maria. When news of D.J. Boy gets around, the town gets all excited. But not everyone is happy. D.J. Boy being around doesn't please the bad roller team, the Dark Knights.

The Dark Knights leader Heavy-Met Tony, calls his gang together straight away. "We can't afford to lose the next competition. We have to do something about that D.J. Boy."

"What are we gonna do? Go on, tell us!"
"Not cause a fuss, Let's get him to come over."
"Hey, it's gonna be real bad news if that D.J. Boy gets into the competition"
"Help! Help! Aah......!!"

"Maria.....!"
D.J. Boy comes running, but the Dark Knights are one step ahead of him, and Maria is carried off.
"You coward, Tony. Well, It's just a question of who is the better rollerskater!"
D.J. Boy sets out in search of his true love, Maria.

  • The arcade game looks way better then the home port.

  • Easier? I've played the Genesis version on an emulator before, but I was never able to beat the first stage. There are NO CONTINUES.

  • This should be CHRIS BROWN: THE GAME! he beat the shit out of that girl
