  • everyone is talking as if this was a choice that they made. The mother actually had to do this to her child for her to be socially accepted. The consequences of a girl not having her feet bound in the time where it was mandatory was crucial. She would be an outcast of society, possibly dragging her whole family with her. She would also lose the chance of ever getting married or having children. It was not a choice, it was something that they had to do.

  • the three broken toes part scred the hell out of me!

  • poorly researched.

  • terrible reporting.

  • @cigarbabe2 True. But plastic surgery isn't nearly as painful and is completely at the choice of the person. It's looked down upon by most people. Foot binding was forced on young children by parents and was excruciatingly painful and could even lead to death.

Yes, there are bad traditions in any culture but China has some of the most brutal in its past.

  • @EPICsliceOFcake You can find disgusting and torturous practices in any culture not only in the ancient Chinese. What about implanting plastic bags of water or silicone or any chemical injections in your chest, cheeks, lips or ass right here in the good ole US of A?

We have many "beauty Practices" that would appear horrible to people in other countries.

  • i had to watch this in history class.

  • @LakeshoreGc I agree. Also I think these types of videos, if anything, should be made by the Chinese themselves ..

  • While interesting, this video has many wrong facts. If you want to know more about it, looking elsewhere would be wise.

  • This was not a choice of the child. >< The mother would always do it. Heck...if the girl denied, what do you think would have happened? 'Oh. Go to your room with one week of no sweets" HELL NO. They were beat like a snare drum. You think it's bad what some parents do today. @SandnesMiss is right. They didn't have a choice. It was either 'Do what I tell you to do' or 'Wish you had after I beat you uncontrollably and then have no future' Yeesh.

  • @lol4eva96 it is based on the same principle, even though it's less extreme. it is uncomfortable and even painful (worn for more than a few hours), unhealthy, and prevents participation in certain activities (walking a long distance, running or passing through a muddy area).

In a way this is like reading a dystopian novel; whatever is depicted there is obviously an exaggerated version, but it still shows us what is wrong with our culture.
