Director, Chico Colvard received his J.D. from Boston College Law School. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, where he offers film related courses and curates the UMass Film Series. His award winning film, FAMILY AFFAIR, premiered in competition at Sundance in 2010 and was the first film acquired by Oprah Winfrey for her new cable channel, OWN. The New York Times said the doc "emerges as one of the years best documentaries" and gave the film their Critics' Pick. The Boston Globe named it "one of the most psychologically complex movies ever made." He is a former Filmmaker-in-Residence at WGBH in Boston and Sundance Creative Producing Fellow. Chico has received funding from the Ford Foundation, LEF Moving Image Fund, Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media and Vital Projects Fund. Chico is a frequent speaker at colleges and universities, film festival panelist and recent juror at Full Frame, IFFBoston and Silverdocs. He is the current DocYard moderator at the Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square. His new film, BLACK MEMORABILIA, examines the culture around the collectibles and antiques that serve as reminders of America's troubled racial past and present. The film is also a portrait of the people who consume, manufacture and assume the identities of these objects.
I was wondering what the sisters felt about seeing this film and having their past and their thoughts filmed. Also if it has helped them to see the positive effect of telling their story.

It had to be really hard for Chico to make this documentary and maintain emotional control. He showed a lot of courage, and so did his sisters.

@jilberia86 especially since that fat ass is lying up in bed all day getting fatter and blaming everyone else for his actions.

LAST NIGHT I SAW THIS DOCUMENTARY ON OWN NETWORK, AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT I WAS DISTURBED TO THE CORE! THIS MAN, THE FATHER, REPEATEDLY RAPED HIS DAUGHTERS FOR YEARS, AND NOONE, NOT EVEN THE MOTHER, HAD A CLUE OF WHATS BEEN HAPPENING RIGHT UNDER HER ROOF. WHEN PAULA, THE SISTER THAT GOT SHOT BY CHICO, FINALLY CONFESSED, IT WAS A BIT TOO LATE. THE DEMAGE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE. I ADMIRED THE COURAGE OF THESE LADIES SO MUCH! I CAN NEVER BE AS FORGIVEN AS THEY ARE. VERY INSPIRING INDEED.

This film was also so touching because it took tremendous compassion and honesty to make this film.

. I was deeply touched by this prolific and sensitive film. It was an honor to meet Chico Colvard. We need more men as sensitive and insightful as him in the movement to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault I applaud Chico and his sisters for having the courage and tenacity to make this film. Family Affair helps to Break The Silence about the epidemic of sexual assault. and is making an important contribution to social change,

I know a member of the family , she turned out to be a remarkable individual and a great freind. She has a positive spirit and if I had never seen this film I would have never known

I thought this film was like a blend between "Precious" and "Dogtooth" -- except everything here really happened. Talk about truth being stranger or better than fiction. Two thumbs up!

You think you're going to witness a train wreck and instead are presented with a beautiful portrait of family. The way the plots unfold, it's almost like a scripted drama. Nothing sentimental here. Just a near perfect film.

A masterful film that has better served my practice, both in how I treat my patients and how my colleagues and I speak to each other about the issues raised in the film. It is a brave and insightful piece of "art" that I can't stop marveling a
