Paul Revere & the Raiders, iconic rock and roll band from the 1960's, appear on Hollywood Palace in late 1966 with host Ray Bolger, the famous scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz. The Raiders play "The Great Airplane Strike" which is based on fact when all planes are grounded forcing the Raiders to bus their way to their next gig, but also providing a story line for this original song. The Raiders featured here are: Jim Harpo Valley, Phil Fang Volk, Mike Smitty Smith, Mark Lindsay and Paul Revere. The Raiders hold the title of having more television airings in the decade of the 60's then any other rock band in history, over 750 airings.

  • @karmices You're sadly mistaken with your facts. I'm the original bass player for the Raiders, and I played my instrument on all the recordings during my time period with the group. As a band, we sat in the studio with our producer, Terry Melcher, & worked out the basic track. This was OUR music, OUR performance, with OUR own hands, and OUR own souls. Comments like this make me sick. I was an eyewitness, I know the truth. After the original band split in '67, it's anyone's guess. -Fang

  • @SonicWheelRecords Wow, Fang! I loved you guys from fourth grade or so - you were my favorite band...my brother worked at a temp agency sometime probably early nineties or so, and Drake Levin called in with some business...don't know details. Sorry to hear he died. That said, I did enjoy the Raiders with Harpo in the band, but lost interest as they started replacing more of you. Good to see you're still playing (checked out Sonic Wheel).

  • @psychkoala Under the Beatles? I don't think so! The Beatles music did not age well IMO. The Raiders music was ahead of its time and sounds good to my ears today along with Animals, kinks, Zombies.

  • 3 3 3 Paul Revere & The Raiders! I remember The Hollywood Palace coming on Saturday evenings & got all my dumb weekend homework done before ithe show came on. We didn't have color TV until 1968 but it was no big whoop since I watched PR&Rs on WTAI in B&W anyway.

    Great warm & fuzzy memories!

  • Very under rated band... with lots of great songs !

Moby Grape, the Flamin' Groovies, and the Raiders are all up there with the Animals, Kinks, Stones, and Zombies, imo- right under the Beatles.

  • I remember this performance. I saw them at my rich uncles house. You know... The Raiders in color! Up to that point I would only see them in Black and White on the Show "Where the Action Is"

  • @SonicWheelRecords It's great to hear Paul Revere And the Raiders on youtube. My older brother who grew up in the 60's and was 15 years older than I, used to let me listen to this song all the time. At 45 years of age now I still DIG it!

  • These shows had awesome backgrounds for the artists.

  • the Raiders are cool, but this might have been after the time of the Hollywood Palace super "act-card presenter girl" Raquel Welch.---or does anyone remember that?

  • At 17 I saw the Raiders live at the Oakland Auditorium in the 1960s, and it was a show that brought the house down; much better than would even be apparent by these fine clips. As we went in from the hallway, Sonny and Cher were to our left smoking a cigarette. And as might be expected, young Cher looked quite cheeky and bored, letting her eyes wander all over my trousers.

  • Groovy!!
