WARNING: some people may find some scenes in this video distressing
This is just a video i made in my spare time to show what happens in Australian Bobby calf, Pork, Ultra fine wool and Live export industrys. * there is no intention of copyright*
Bobby Calfs: over 700,000 week-old calves discarded yearly as 'waste products' of the dairy industry. Most people aren't aware that in order to produce milk, dairy cows are kept almost continually pregnant. Unwanted calves (known as 'bobby calves') are sent to slaughter in their first week of life so that milk can be harvested for human consumption. Unknown to most consumers, the dairy industry continues to cut costs at the expense of animals. Right now they want to make it legal to deny calves food for the last 30 hours of their lives.
Pigs: In Australia, the majority of the 300,000 female breeding pigs (sows) are kept inside sheds continually pregnant and confined.
It is these animals that produce the piglets destined to become bacon, ham and pork products. Most sows are confined for at least some of their 16 week pregnancy in tiny metal individual stalls, (and one third for the entire pregnancy!) so small they are unable to turn around. At best they can take a small step forward. They have no bedding. They are forced to stand or lie on hard floors. Just prior to giving birth, they are moved to a 'nursery' which would outrage every Australian mother. Pending mothers are confined in an even smaller area where their body is encircled by metal bars to even further limit their movement.
Mother pigs are provided with no bedding or straw to make a birthing 'nest', so she has no choice but to give birth to her piglets on a hard floor. Nurturing and interacting with her young is impossible as a cruel metal frame imprisons her.
She will watch on helplessly as her babies have their teeth clipped, their tails cut off, and are castrated without pain relief. Her young are removed after 3 or 4 weeks, she is impregnated again, and the cycle of suffering and deprivation continues. A day eventually comes when for the first time in her life she experiences sun on her back and fresh air to breathe. What she doesn't know as she is loaded on that truck, so lame, ill or 'unproductive' that she is no longer capable of creating profit, is that it is also to be the last day of her life...
Sheep: There is a factory farming industry that the vast majority of Australians would be unaware of. Some 'ultra-fine' wool growers keep thousands of sheep in tiny individual pens to supply an elite international market and wealthy buyers from the world's foremost fashion houses.
Ultra-fine wool growing is an intensive animal industry. In fact, one particular facility which opens its doors to the public, is even appropriately called—'The Wool Factory'.
And factory it is... Specially bred sheep are kept indoors in individual small pens 24 hours a day for 5 or more years. Nylon coats are worn by the 'shedded' sheep to further ensure that dust and dirt does not enter their fleece, and—like every other factory farming industry—the behavioural and social needs of the sheep, intrinsic factors which provide quality of life, are completely ignored. Some indoor 'ultra fine' facilities house the sheep in groups. But sheep are not designed to be kept indoors and should be grazing most of the day with their flock.
The impacts of chronic stress caused by an inappropriate environment were obvious. The confined sheep continually chew on the wooden slats and strands of wire which enclose them. Repetitive body movements were also observed—classic stereotypic behaviours caused by a barren environment, combined with the inability to exercise, or to perform simple natural behaviours such as graze on grass
Live Export: Australia is the largest exporter of live animals in the world. Millions of animals, mostly cattle and sheep, are exported by sea each year. Many die on the way: all suffer. They are sent around the globe to be slaughtered, most whilst fully conscious.
During the last 30 years, Australia has sent more than 150 million sheep and cattle to be slaughtered in other parts of the world, such as the Middle East and South East Asia. Livestock ships can carry up to 100,000 animals for voyages lasting up to 3 weeks.
More than 2 million animals have died on these ships en route,
Upon arrival in overseas countries, animals endure further transport, feed-lotting, and handling practices (dragging, trussing, transportation in car boots), practices that are both unacceptable and illegal in Australia. The routine slaughter method in the majority of importing countries is cutting of throat without pre-stunning. Animals killed in this way can endure prolonged, painful, fearful deaths.
