Walt Whitman High School (Bethesda, MD) Chamber Choir performs "Benediction," a traditional Irish blessing ("May the road rise to meet you...") arranged for music by Owen Goldsmith. Directed by Jeffrey Davidson. The Benediction traditionally closes the school's annual Winter Choral Concert (and other major choral performances). Before singing the Benediction, choir alumni are invited to join the choristers. Choristers then surround the audience, at the Winter Choral Concert holding candlelights in a darkened auditorium. The Benediction is a moving tradition binding students, alumni, and the community in affection for choral music (and for each other). Recorded for www.waltwhitmanmusic.org in 2005. Photos by Jennifer and Larisa Hohenboken and Diana Deem, taken from the WWHS Music Departments choral website (Winter Choral Concerts from various years): www.waltwhitmanmusic.org/ChoralHome.htm.

  • Japeter2000; Looking forward to the Christmas selections of 2011 that I hope you can present here on Youtube.

  • @20031200 There are several now: St. Olaf Choir,"Star in the East," Robin Williamson, "Green Groweth the Holly," Walt Whitman HS, "Dormi Jesu," Sweet Honey in the Rock, "Hush Lil Baby," Bruce Cockburn, "Lord of the Starfields," Revels Players, "Shall We Gather at the River," and Bill Douglas, "Deep Peace." There are also a few medieval instrumental pieces: "Danse," Ensemble Anonymous, and "Saltarello," Dufay Collective. Go to my channel and hit "All" to find them. Enjoy, and happy holidays!

  • @20031200 I don't have any input in the Walt Whitman HS Choirs' selections for performance. They very well may have performed the song heard at the royal Danish wedding. I am the parent of a WWHS alum who was in the choirs, but has moved on to become an opera singer.

  • Enjoyed your presentation very much.

  • @20031200 Thanks. Wonderful blessing, wonderful singing, wonderful tradition at WWHS.

  • Wonderful! But wait till the ACLU hears that God was mentioned in school!

  • @ddalhover Hush. It probably originally was in Gaelic.
