'Cygnus X-1' is the first Black Hole ever detected in the Cygnus constellation, in 1964.
Song is off the album 'A Farewell to Kings' (1977)

LYRICS

"Cygnus X-1, Book One: The Voyage"

[Prologue:]
In the constellation of Cygnus, there lurks a mysterious, invisible force: the black hole
of Cygnus X-1...

Six Stars of the Northern Cross
In mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night...

[1]
Invisible to telescopic eye
Infinity, the star that would not die

All who dare to cross her course
Are swallowed by her fearsome force

Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized...at the core?
Or through the Astral Door?
To soar...

[2]
I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way
On my ship, the 'Rocinante'
Wheeling through the galaxies
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the black hole
Gains control...

[3]
Spinning, whirling
Still descending
Like a spiral sea
Unending...

Sound and fury
Drown my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart...

  • I noticed in the picture that they classed Cygnus as a "Super-Massive Blackhole.

It's actually a "Stellar" Blackhole, Super-Massive's are found in the center of galaxies.

Although S.M.B.H.'s are much much larger than Stellar Blackholes, a Stellar blackhole will rip you to shreds much faster.

A ship could in theory enter the singularity of a SMBH without being torn apart right away because it is so large but you would be cooked quickly from the heat.

  • @Illuminati10101 Thanks, I didn't noticed that when I made this vid !! Indeed X-1 is a stellar BH but it was important in the late 70's, and Rush/Neil Peart dealt with it because it was the first BH ever found !! Huge deal back then. Until then BHs were only predicted theoritically by Einstein's General theory of relativity as assumed singularities in spacetime.

  • @Brickdump That's simple..when you're drunk, you can love anything. And when I said anything, it means ANITHING! xD

  • That groove in the beginning sounds so modern and funky.

  • @Neueregel who cares, in book 2 he says that dionysus is the god of love when he really is the god of wine.

  • epic song

  • lol,.. i wasn't trying to be picky. Just an observation.

    Rush is awesome!

  • @Bwaaderent yah, i haven't listened to the original lp in quite some time, but if i remember correctly it faded into the next song

  • A Bad Ass song.

  • @ePhilosopher9 indeed it's near NW of Pegasus. But techincally X-1 is located in Cygnus constellation not in Pegasus.
