This was one of the first big hits of the 1920's. "Whispering" is sometimes touted as the first or one of the first million selling recordings. I have seen one book that claims sales of over two million in 1920 alone. NOT TRUE. Please read Allan Sutton's fine article on the Mainspring Press site: http://www.mainspringpress.com/millio...

Recorded on August 23, 1920, featuring Warren Luce soloing on the musical saw. "Oh, yes, Elizabeth, of COURSE you may have another sandwich....as soon as Aunt Phoebe shuts off that goddamn music!"/"But I LIKE Paul Whiteman!"/"I dont' care if it's Pryor's Band!! SHUT THAT MACHIINE OFF!! I'm trying to relax!!".
Edisonphonographs, Yes Vernon Dalhart's Victor recording 'The Wreck of the Old 97' is also sometimes mentioned. Of course he re-recorded that electrically at the dawn of the Orthophonic era so both recordings are usually counted as one. Regards, J.
DrKorn5, It's put away right now and I can't recall off the top of my head what year it dates to. It's a very early one, IIRC '21 or '22. I agree-there's nothing like listening to the real thing, acoustic reproduction is so very different than electric. Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for the kind words. Regards, J.
Somehow, I can picture this as being part of a picnic somewhere. A car with a rumble seat, deli sandwiches, glass bottles of soda pop, fresh fruit, and perhaps a Mason jar full of "preserves" (It WAS during Prohibition, no?).
MrUnidyne, Sounds perfect! Who's going to bring the 'preserves'? Ha Ha! I'm glad you enjoyed the clip, now that the warm weather is here again I'll be posting some more from the parks. Regards, J.
