i went to a class for this, and my teacher told me that it is like scrapbooking but instead of planning out where youre going to put pictures and things, you just "smash" them in. and you can stick things easily in with cool tape or the glue stick on the end of the pen. instead of a nice clean look of the ordinary scrapbook, its more of a grungeified version. but yes, it is a lot like scrapbooking, but i find it more fun!
