40 YEARS OF FUNK!

Days like these 40 years ago, a new born group from Flint, MI was added to the countless of that era. The difference with THIS group was that it promoted as if they were a supergroup from day one (!) And supergroup they were in short space of time, playing at large festivals, such as the one in Atlanta the 4th of July 1969 in front of almost 200.000 surprised spectators! The news spread like wild fire and the buzz about them became so strong, that were chosen as 'headliners' at many later festivals! With such an unbelievable crowd response, it wasn't an accident that Grand Funk soon became the most successful group in America, selling more albums and tapes than any other artists in 1970 (with less or no radio and press support...) And if in 1970 the band was so successful [4 gold albums in less than 5 months] nothing could stop the Railroad in 1971! They did two world tours and even sold out the legendary -55000 seat- Shea Stadium in New York City, in just 72 hours!!! [a record - period]
Unfortunately, minimal footage [for such a legend band] has been preserved on film from their early trio days with Terry Knight as producer and manager...
Here's for the first time some unseen footage of Mark, Don & Mel jamming, just like Knight witnessed them that cold day of March 1969...

Hey all you brothers and sisters! A 'Grand' thanks for all your kind comments! That's the fuel keeps me going... :o) Lots of comments and certainly, tons of personal messages and emails I'm getting' since I've post it, so forgive me if I haven't reply to you individually...
I'll try to give some more info that might be helping in any of your questions. So:
First of all, this isn't Shea Stadium footage you seeing here... I hope we soon be able to enjoy the real thing... This footage was shot June 25 1971 at the De Doelen in Rotterdam, Holland [during the first world tour] and I've bought it directly from the guy who shot it! It's the best quality out of silent 8mm film I've ever seen! The main body work [editing] was done by me some time ago, using about half of the 8mm film I then had in my hands, although I've put the last touches just recently. Meanwhile, I finally manage to purchase one more reel from the same concert (negotiations lasted more than 2 years) although it remains 8mm format. I may transfer it in the future full professionally (along with the first one) putting out a much better result [and synch] but as I said, this will be in the -far- future, as it already had cost me a lot of time and money! Of course then, I'd be gladly offering a re-edited version to a possible official release [to be included as an intro to the main theme, or whatever] if I'm asked to... Well see...
For now, let's all celebrate the 40th Anniversary Of Funk with this 'Monumental Funk II'.
Enjoy!

  • @JohninFunk no, Mark is out of the society as he represents now only just 1/3....and Brewer's wife once told me that at the moment her husband doesn't envisage any financial convenience to issue/release the Shea Stadium concert for we fans...that's all. Terry Knight was the real owner of this movie as he was the producer without releasing it....then he died as we all know.

  • @MrHiwattamps the same questions you put I'm making as well all the time...but I think that until the rights management will be only in Brewer's hands (he's now the King of Grand Funk) we will suffer again & again....love that album (E Pluribus) and you can hear some live excerpts from that somewhere (very bad recordings...) but they really sound powerful...maybe one day, who knows...bye

  • ¿porque se separaron cuando se veìan tan conformes? geniales y verdaderos.

  • @ladytandsirc your comment should be directed to one Donald Brewer. Mark has already said he wants to do a reunion FOR THE FANS. Mel will do whatever Brewer tells him to do.

  • all I can say is nothing , I am speechless.

  • I know this is the recording from the LIVE album, edited to footage from the Shea Stadium concert. Great job!

Somebody must have the entire Shea concert. I saw pieces of "Into the Sun" and "T.N.U.C." in that clip.

I wish they'd release it soon. The longtime fans deserve to see/own a piece of rock history. We're not getting any younger!!!! Ha!!

  • WWWOOOWWW!!!!!

  • The spirit and vitality of Grand Funk Railroad continues to be enjoyed 40 years later.

Marks Says Alright - what a great performance. Thanks for putting this up JohninFunk.

Saw them in 1970 and 1971 in Montreal - remember their electric energy not to mention my 2 days of deafness from sitting in the third row.

Long live Mark Don and Mel.
