Great performance. So nice to see rare stuff like this. No flaws at all. Only bad stuff are the comments on this thread. We black people can create reality show drama on any topic, even a great Marvin/Tammi video. Band was good. Both singers were on point. Marv hit every note perfectly as usual. He could do these songs in his sleep. Stop making drama up and enjoy. Peace.

I wish I could find more videos of Marvin and Tammi doing live performances together. Seems this may be the only song they did live together.

wow thanks so much for pointing that out. Makes the video mean a little bit more to me now. I would have watched this video a million times and never picked up on that. Thanks again.

The Tonight Show band was in transition in '67 with old fashioned Skitch Henderson-hired players under replacement Milton "Gong Show" DeLugg, By the end of the year, Doc Severinsen would take over and bring in some of the best players ever, including Clark Terry. Also, this enormous band was in the same tiny studio where Jimmy Fallon is now; the Roots are on two levels now, but then 20 were shoved in a corner obscuring part of the audience. And how do you know unspecified Pat wasn't awesome too?

Yes, Johnny, by all means get Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell out so you can move on with the show. After all, you've got "Pat" with you tonight. Jeeze, talk about hindsight revealing how perverse Carson's priorities were. No one could care less, four decades later, who "Pat" was, but we're still listening to Marvin and Tammi!

He stayed out of the limelight for a few years after her death. i just don't think he was the same at all after she died. I have seen him sing this song with another gal, and the spark just wasn't there. He was a genius, and had a tragic life. Both of them were taken way too soon. I think they would have made a wonderful couple. I am sure they are now though.

Marvin probably loved Tammi quite a bit. He was reportedly distraught and went into a depression when she died, instigating his desire to get What's Going on released cause he just didn't give a shit about the Motown system anymore. I think he loved her but didn't act on it cause of his own marriage to Anna Gordy but that one was doomed too. Marvin had a complicated life and was a tragic figure but man what a genius. Tammi could've had a big career but she was taken from us far too early.
