Auke Ruijg is the senior DP lecturer at Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz who likes to keep his hand in by returning to work on board to keep up with the times and techniques which he finds helps him in his role as a lecturer.

Auke was in Manila attending FMFI Maritime Foundation, Inc. along with a colleague Harm van der Ende for the purpose of purpose of exchange ideas on techniques to used in providing training to students using simulators and very kindly agreed to saying a few words about the Dynamic Positioning operations.

In the 135 years of its existence the institute has developed into one of the foremost nautical colleges in The Netherlands, of great renown at home and abroad.
The Maritime Institute provides bachelor degree education Maritime Officer and Hydrography. Besides it provides a number of maritime courses and participates in of research projects.

The Maritime Simulator Training Center (MSTC) plays a major role in education and courses.

MSTC Terschelling was one of the first in the world to deploy both a full-mission ship simulator and a second bridge simulator. The latter, a Norcontrol Polaris SBS2000 bridge simulator, has a 2400 view and is equipped with Dynamic Positioning/Dynamic Tracking apparatus.

MIWB has for more than 10 years been the DP training centre for DP training in the Netherlands.

The MIWB uses an A class full mission DP maneuvering simulator from Kongsberg, with a 220° outside view produced by beamers, radars, VHFs, ECDIS, QINSy survey and a manual maneuvering console.

DP time prior to Basic Course: From 1st January 2012, The Nautical Institute will implement the following criteria for DP time acquired prior to Basic course:

A maximum of 30 days DP time gained prior to attending the Basic / Induction course will be recognised toward the award of a DP certificate.

These 30 days allow employers to continue the practice of evaluating prospective DPO's prior to attending an Induction course.

Minimum Qualification: From 1st January 2012, The Nautical Institute will implement the following criteria for entry onto the DP Operators Training Scheme

The Minimum qualification will be set as STCW Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck and Regulation III/1 -- III /2 -- III/3 Engine.

Alternative appropriate marine vocational qualifications will be considered on a "case by case" basis

Prospective DPO's, who are in the process of training for an STCW certificate can start the DP scheme and complete all the elements, but cannot, apply for the DP certificate until they hold an appropriate STCW certificate.

Prospective DPO's, not meeting the above requirements will be able to apply for certification, if they commenced training prior to the implementation date and all elements have been completed within a 5 year period at the time of application.

Following implementation all existing DPO certification will be honoured and remain valid.

  • I think that''s James there giving an interview? I'd like to see that DP training facilities you have there when I return to Manila if you don't mind. Just to see How much DP changed since I did 20 yrs ago. Best Regards....... Nick "D"
