ZOMBIE JOAN IS THE "LEAN BABY", AND SUGAR DADDY DOES SINATRA AND DIRECTS, TOO.
HE HAD A LITTLE TROUBLE POSITIONING JOAN, TO SHOW HER TRUE "LEAN-NESS". THIS IS STRICTLY A VIDEO REHEARSAL , BUT ALSO A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK. JOAN HAD A HEADACHE, AND WAS ACTING
A BIT REMOVED THROUGHOUT, BUT ON THE
PLAYBACKS IT TURNED OUT TO BE KINDA OFFBEAT, AND DADDY LIKED IT . He was just learning the lyrics. However, he mostly got through them. ---------- April of '53, Frank Sinatra had left Columbia records, and stepped into Capitol records for
his first song : "My Lean Baby". This song started the whole new swingin' Sinatra , and his 2'nd career. Along with the new label came Nelson Riddle and his orchestra for some great new
jazz influneced backdrops for the famous crooner. The rest is history. The legend went on and on.
Daddy and Zombie Joan really enjoyed rehearsing the Sinatra classic, and later
performed it it at the Gardenia Club in Hollywood.
They both enjoyed the looseness of the rehearsal
video, so they decided to also make it the final video !
----Also recorded by Dinah Washington.

  • This woman couldn't be more zombie-ish. I'm thinking a mannequin might have seemed more involved in the process.

I love this tune, tho. And Johnny has a great voice!

  • Yeah, Zombie Joan is always that way.

However, she's a sweet, giving girl.

When I made the !'st playback I saw

that she wasn't contributing, but she is

a size "O", and that fitted right in. Keely Smith used to do that with Louis Prima: always a poker face. I also have loved "Lean Baby"for years. Thanks, Johnny August.

  • A bit removed?

ZJ is like, "Let's get this shit over, I wanna smoke."

  • You're absolutely right ! I had to move things as fast as possible, because

she had finished one smoke 5 minutes

before we started rehearsing. 5 minutes

is too much time in between ! Good to hear from you ! -- Johnny.

  • While I was in college, I remember Frank

singing this on the coffee shop juke box.
