@legatofancier :)) ok, so you read the book, and there is described a Sherlock Holmes by physic and character.And you made an idea how sherlock would look and act in reality. How many movies has been done so far about S.H. ?Alot. Maybe this one is a revolution of the idea about Sherlock Holmes. If you would stop criticizing this film like a BITCH you are :) maybe you would be amused and even impressed by R.D.Jr. :) but anyway the movie remains the same so, doesn't matter :)

@MrSubsemnatu - As someone who has re-read the Sherlock Holmes stories many times over many years, I can state for a fact that Holmes is probably the most clearly drawn character in all fiction. NO - not anyone can play Sherlock Holmes, and certainly not Downey. Subjective impressions granted, the archetype is absolutely clear. Downey does not meet any of the criteria.
