"Death at Broadcasting House", directed by Reginald Denham in 1934, was written by Sir John Gielgud's brother Val, who also makes a rare appearance in front of the camera as a radio producer. A murder is committed during the broadcast of a radio play, and the police inspector called in to investigate (played by Ian Hunter), finds a large number of suspects all with an apparent motive for the murder. No real clue is given to the murder's identity until the last reel of the film, so keep watching if you want to find out whodunnit!

Interspersed into the story are cameo appearances by some well known radio personalities of the day, including comedian Gillie Potter, and delightful musical numbers by cabaret star Elizabeth Welch and personality vocalist Eve Becke, accompanied by Percival Mackey's dance band.

Jack Hawkins also makes a very early appearance as one of the murder suspects, and Peter Haddon supplies comedy relief at regular intervals through the film. A young Donald Wolfit is cast as the unfortunate victim. Others in the cast include Austin Trevor and Henry Kendall.

The film was screened on BBC2 in 1982 as part of a short season of films celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of the foundation of the BBC, but since then it has slipped into obscurity. A print is held in the BFI and hopefully one day the film may qualify for a dvd release.

The film was originally protected by the Copyright Acts of 1911 and 1956. Copyright in the UK expired in 1984, and the film is presented here for research purposes only.

  • The more this is viewed, the more I think it must have inspired the Radio Parade of the next year with Will Hay . Radio Parade has several scenes that are straight copies and spoofs, and even features Eve Becke singing!! I was always surprised that Will Hay remained with the BBC after the Radio Parade jibes! but then he knew he was a big star and not likely to be barred All the personalities in this film must have appeared with approval from Lord Reith.

  • It did resurface on Ch4 films recently, quite an interesting look at the BBC, at a time when they were very protective of their image. Can't imaging what Lord Reith made of this! at least it was not attacked like the portrayal by Will Hay in Radio Parade, so one assumes the well connected Val Gielgud was approved of by Reith and the board.

  • Oh how wonderful! Thank you!
