Johann Sebastian Bach: Chaconne in d-minor.
part 1 (for the Celloscores click "show more")

Making this video recording in April 2008 was in fact only an attempt for me to realize the performance of the Bach Chaconne on the cello. I looked upon this idea as an exciting and honorific challenge. But ever since, approx. 30 live performances shaped and hopefully improved the level of that earlier first attempt.
Recently, I took the trouble and courage to combine these experiences with my skill of cello playing, and put them on paper. My goal was to make this handwritten score available for everyone who would be interested.
The 3rd version of the of the handwritten score, which is also included in the file, deserves special attention. From the aspect of the left hand's orientation, it focuses on a unique methodology that was never explained before. The "assisting tone system" which is built-into the piece's rhythmical structure is the work of three decades. This system makes the practicing procedure more enjoyable. It turns the exhausting and often pointless practice hours into fun. Not to mention the drastic time savings...
I will gladly give help and suggestions or advice to anyone regarding this particular way of practice.
The idea of the 4 cello transcription of J.S.Bach's D-minor Toccata occurred to me long time ago, but took me until now to finally realize it. Transcribing this composition for various musical instruments is common nowadays, but if we recall the breathtaking sound of the unique cello ensemble of Villa-Lobos, we obviously come to the conclusion that the transcription of this Majestic Bach composition can only be imagined through a cello ensemble as an alternative to the fantastic original organ version

  • Wow, coming from a violinist who knows how difficult this piece is to play on a violin, I have utmost respect for anyone merely capable of playing this piece on cello, never mind creating the emotion portrayed here. Stunning and a true achievement. I don't think a lot of people realise how immensely difficult this piece must be on cello.

  • I think the dark shady character of the chaconne fits the cello well. It's so compelling.
