Paul Bender (1875-1947) was one of the most famous ballad singers of his time, and in this selection, maybe the most difficult ballad Loewe ever wrote, you can hear why. He first studied medicine, but soon changed his mind and had his voice educated by Luise Ress and Baptist Hoffmann. After three years in Breslau he became a member of the Munich Court Opera and was their first bas for the next 30 years. Even after his official retirement he made a few guest appearances. So he sang Fafner at the Scala in 1938 and 1939, and returned to Munich in 1939 for the world premiere of Carl Orff's "Der Mond". He gave his last concert only a few days before his death in Munich.
What a joy to hear this. Not bad, all those runs, for a famous Wagnerian basso profondo!

Splendid, but this song is not an obvious candidate for the acoustic recording process... :)
Thanks, thanks, thanks, again!
