A nice halling from Transtrand, Dalarna after Omas Per Nilsson. It fits nicely on the bowed harp with a minor modification!

Here is the sheet music for the tune:
http://www.folkwiki.se/Musik/23

As you can see, I took the part that is on octave up and moved it down to the same octave as the rest of the melody. This is one way you can modifie and play tunes that is not in range of your instrument (like with the Swedish bagpipes).

  • Lol, that is stupid version of the orginal ancient finnish jouhikko.

  • It's funny..After some research..I just read on a trustworthy Finnish site, about culture and instruments of Finland, that the Jouhikko came from the west of Finland (Sweden, Norwway, Iceland etc).

Also the first mentioning if the Jouhikko in literature is "only" from the 1500s (of course, the instrument can have been present much earlier than that, but still...).

So old, yes. Ancient, nah. Scandinavia is way to young to be able to have "ancient" instruments.

    Still, it's a cool instrument!

  • I've no idea what fizetr's on about, the phrasing and accentuation are very much the way a halling is supposed to sound like.

Awesome set of videos, by the way! I see we share a lot of the same influences (like Hedningarna) as well as a passion for collecting instruments. ^_^

  • very nicely performed!

  • @FredFredrik

Scandinavia has housed the northern germanic peoples for for many thousands of years. I would hardly call Scandinavia young at all. Rather, the more accurate term you'd be looking for, I think, would be "newcomers" as they were relatively late to enter the world stage in comparison wth the asian/ middle eastern peoples. This instrument is a more modern (medieval) rendition of a much older bowed lyre, from what I understand. It is played beautifully!

  • amazing!

  • @Azordead Jouhikkos have 2,3 or 4 strings, according to the instrument's dimensions.

Before judging take informations, Mr Arrogance.

  • Thanks for the tuning!! A last question, what sort of string do you put for this instrument and the size of each string? Thanks very very much! Noone CAN help me in the south of France!!!

  • Very Nice! Juhikko!! Is it hard to play?

  • Wow! I just got an instrument like this. How is this tuned?

  • okay but what i've heard about it in finland that it was played mostly in karelia wich is'nt so close to skandinavia. But you probably know this better.;) a beutiful instrument anyhow
