  • Hi Julian,

1). I'm Romanian, and my religion is Greek-Catholic, Romanian Church United with Rome, see Wikipedia, I was a visitor of the St. Basil's Byzantine Catholic parish, which is presently offering the Divine Liturgy on Sundays (11am) at St. Albert the Great church, a Roman Catholic church in Palo Alto, CA.

    2) The choir is singing different and beautiful chant in different languages, but the conductor (the nice young lady) is with Ukrainian ancestors.

I know very well what the Greek-Catholic church is, I just get frustrated and upset that the Ruthenian Church monopolizes the title "Byzantine" for the reasons I specified.

The point is, that if a church assigns itself to an ethnic title, they should follow the customs of that church. I.E. if they claim to be "byzantine" then why don't they sing byzantine chant? They are Ruthenians, not Byzantines.

  • So if you're "Byzantine" then why are you singing a Transcarpathian chant in Church Slavonic?

If you were truly Byzantine, you'd be singing in Greek in Byzantine Chant.

  • Saint Basil's Byzantine Catholic parish is presently celebrating Sunday Divine Liturgies at St. Albert the Great Church, 1095 Channing Ave., Palo Alto, CA. Daily services and office are still located at St. Basil's in Los Gatos, CA
