What I think is just as relevant as the size of the device as far as categorization goes is the way the device is operated.
An mp3 player and a netbook can both have gesture-based interface despite of having a considerable size difference. Both can be keypad/board based as well - or voice or whatnot.
The immediate user interface is a very relevant way to describe or categorize a device, no?
